Can strategy games really work on a phone?
Strategy is the hardest genre to translate to touch. On PC you have a mouse for pixel-perfect selection; on a phone you have a thumb the size of a small country. Most attempts end in frustration.
The games that pull it off rethink the interface instead of shrinking the PC one. Tidewatch Command, for example, drops unit micro-management entirely and lets you assign roles to zones with a radial menu. Fewer inputs, more thinking.
Match length matters too. Ten to fifteen minutes fits mobile life; a two-hour campaign map does not. Bite-sized skirmishes keep the strategy without the fatigue.
My advice when trying a mobile strategy game: give it past the tutorial. These games often front-load complexity and only click after an hour. Push through and you might be surprised.
The genre isn't a bad fit — it just punishes lazy ports harder than any other.
